James Johnson CORBIN
Amelia CONNELL
WARNING:  Based on circumstantial evidence, my assumption here is that our couple was having children out of wedlock before they married.  This scenario needs confirmation.

Wife:  Amelia "Melia" CONNELL / CONELL / CONNEL
Birth:  1813/4
Father:  [Alexander] "Sandy" CONNELL

James Johnson CORBIN; Husband Age at Marriage: 58
Father:  Richard CORBIN
Marriage: 9 Jul 1854, Saint Lucy, Barbados, Caribbean
Spouse: Amelia CORBIN; Wife Age at Marriage: 40
Father: Sandy CONNELL
Source: Barbados Parochial Registers, Series B, 1849-1912
My first assumption here was that Amelia must have had a prior marriage to a CORBIN, but I can find no earlier marriage for her.  What I do find is birth records for the children under the name of Amelia CORBIN, alone.  What this suggests, to me, is that James & Amelia were having children out of wedlock before he finally married her.

2.  Barbados Baptisms, 1739-1891 (online at familysearch.org):
Name Sex Baptism Location Father Mother Film
Horatio Corbin M 22 Jan 1840 Saint Lucy, Barbadoes, Caribbean   Melia Corbin 1157940
Elizabeth Ann Corbin F 28 May 1841 Saint Lucy, Barbadoes, Caribbean   Amelia Corbin 1157940
Alexander Corbin M 14 Jan 1844 Saint Lucy, Barbadoes, Caribbean   Amelia Corbin 1157940
Joseph Howard Corbin M 11 Jul 1847 Saint Lucy, Barbadoes, Caribbean   Amelia Corbin 1157940
If the children had simply been illegitimate, they would be surnamed CONNELL.
In other words, if their father wasn't a CORBIN, why would they have been baptized "Corbin"?
