The name field was blank, but this has to be Marion.

2.  1850 U.S. Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com):  Philip COUNTS (æ 53, b. VA) is living in Scott Co., VA (p. 438A), with his wife, Juliann (æ 55, b. VA), two of their unmarried children, and a married daughter with her husband and two children.

3.  1860 U.S. Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #114 of 208):  Grayson P.O., Carter Co., KY, p. 258, PN 114, 831/751, enumerated 24 Jul 1860, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1860 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
Philips Counts 63 M   farmer 400 315 Va
Sarah      " 37 F   house hand     Ky
Henry Rose 16 M   farm  "      "
Thomas   " 14 M         "
William  " 12 M         "
James E  "  9 M         "
Malissa  "  7 F         "
Jesse    "  4 M         "
Marion   " 8/12 M         "
The youngest child should be Philip's, so should be surnamed COUNT.

4a.  1870 U.S. Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com):  Philip COUNTS (æ 74, b. VA) is living in Carter Co., KY (p. 144B), with a married son.

4b.  1870 U.S. Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #15 of 49):  Old Town P.O. Precinct 4, Greenup Co., KY, Roll M593_466, p. 92A, PN 15, 102/102, enumerated 5 Jul 1870, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1870 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
Rose Sarah 43 F W Keeping house     Kentucky
____ Thomas 23 M W Iron Ore Miner     Kentucky
____ Melissa 17 F W Works at home     Kentucky
____ Jesse 14 M W Iron Ore Miner     Kentucky
____ Marion 10 M W       Kentucky
____ John  3 M W       Kentucky
Presumably, John is like Marion, a son of Philip COUNTS, both of whom have reverted to using surname ROSE.  Y-DNA testing of patrilineal line male descendants of Marion and John should be pursued to confirm their fatherhood.  Philip and Sarah have obviously separated or divorced because he is still living in Carter Co., KY, also not remarried (see above).

5.  1880 U.S. Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com):  Phillip COUNTS (æ 84, b. VA) is living in Carter Co., KY (p. 558A), with a married son.

1890 U.S. Census:  the 1890 Census Population Schedules were destroyed.
