2.  Census Index:  U.S. Selected Counties, 1830 (Broderbund CD-315):  given how late in the year our subjects were married, it's most likely John was not enumerated as head-of-household.  If the census were enumerated late in the year, the most likely candidates for our subject would be a Thomas COLE in Charlotte Co., VA, and one of the two John T. COLE's in Mecklenburg Co., VA, but a check of the page images at Ancestry.com shows all three are too old.

3.  1840 Census Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #45-46 of 52; extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):

4.  1850 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com; Image #7 of 132):  Henry Co., VA, Roll M432_952, p. 4A, 43/43, enumerated 31 Jul 1850, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1850 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
Mary B. Cole 39 F       Va

Mary E Cole 18 F       Va
Josiah Cole 14 M       Va
Matilda Cole 12 F       Va

Sarah Cole  7 F       Va
Susan Cole  7 F       Va
Virginia W Cole  5 F       Va
John H Warren 3/12 M       Va
There are two obvious interpretations of this record:  One is that Balem WARREN is a recent widower, that John H. WARREN is his son, and that they are boarding with Widow COLE.  What argues against that interpretation is his age and the fact that he has only one very young child.  Another interpretation is that Mary Burl and Balem are shacked up and that John H. WARREN is their illegitimate son, which may have something to do with contemporary secondary sources showing a son, "Harriet John T. COLE (1848-1849)," as having died young.
