Ransom CARPENTER
Ms. __?__
Please Note:  Ransom's wife is said to have had maiden name AVANT, but I have found no evidence to support this claim, which appears to have been made in support of our subject being the father of Avent W.A.B. CARPENTER (b. 1811/2, NC).  As can be seen below, our subject's census records indicate he had no children born before 1825, so I see no justification in making the connection.  Based on circumstantial evidence, it does seem much more likely that Avent is the son of Alexander CARPENTER.
Husband:  Ransom CARPENTER
Birth:  1780, NC
Death apparently:  1850-60, Cumberland Co., NC
Occupation:  farmer, laborer
Marriage:  ca. 1825
Wife:  Ms. __?__
Birth:  1800-1810
Death apparently:  1840-50, Cumberland Co., NC
Occupation:  homemaker
Children said to be:
1.  Samuel  M. CARPENTER, b. 22 Nov 1827
2.  Robert CARPENTER, b. 29 Apr 1828 or 1829?

The problem here is that Robert's birth is only five month after Samuel's.  My guess is that 1828 is wrong because Robert's 1860-80 census records show him born in 1829.  Unfortunately, I can't find find him in the 1850 census because, if I could find him living with Ransom, it would confirm he's Ransom's son.

2.  1810 U.S. Census Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com):  There are no Ransom CARPENTERs indexed in the U.S. census, at all.  There are 43 CARPENTER households in NC, but only one in Cumberland County (Samuel).  There are two AVENT (no AVANT) households in NC, one in Halifax County and one in Nash County.

3.  1820 U.S. Census Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com):  There are no Ransom CARPENTERs indexed in the U.S. census, at all.  There are 47 CARPENTER households in NC, but only two in Cumberland County (Samuel and Edward).  Ransom had no children born before 1825 (see 1830 census below), so despite his mature age in 1820 (viz., 30-39 yrs), he does not appear to have been married by 1820, which would explain his absence from the census.  There are eight AVENT (no AVANT) households in NC; all are in either Nash County or Chatham County.

6b.  1850 U.S. Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com):  There are two male CARPENTERs in Cumberland County who are of an age to be Ransom's son:  Samuel CARPENTER (æ 21, b. NC) and Samuel CARPENTER (æ 23, b. NC).  As both are named Samuel, so only one could be Ransom's son; I suspect the other could be Alexander CARPENTER's son.
