"Garnica" is not Columba's middle name, that is, it is not a second given name as in the English tradition.  In the Spanish naming system, a child takes two surnames:  the father's surname followed by the mother's surname (traditionally, joined with a "y").  The father's surname remains the family name; so, if the tradition were followed with Columba's children, they would be surnamed BUSH y GARNICA, not BUSH y GALLO.  When a woman marries, she retains her own surnames and adds her husband's parents' surnames to her own, so Columba's full Spanish-style name would be Columba GARNICA y GALLO de BUSH y PIERCE.  And don't those of us researching the genealogy of Anglo ancestors wish our culture had such a wonderfully informative naming tradition?!
