The Rebound 1810 Census of Washington County, Kentucky

For a general discussion of the consequences of rebinding early censuses, please see this page. With regard to the 1810 Census of Washington County, Kentucky, I am referring to digital page images online at Ancestry.com. There are related problems with the images at Genealogy.com, but as long as you follow the original page numbers (given below in the tinted yellow box), you can correctly determine the location of the householder.

In the first set of tables below (tinted blue) are the pages as they are grouped and ordered at Ancestry.com. Images are two-page spreads, with the binding edge horizontal. The columns in the tables below are:

Column 1: Ancestry.com's own Image Number (#), plus an indication of whether it's the upper (U) or lower (L) page in the image.

Column 2: A two-digit number inked on every other page by the enumerator while the pages were still in their original order.

Column 3: A three-digit number stamped on every other page by NARA after the pages were rebound out of order.

Column 4: A three-digit number penciled on every page while the pages were still in their original order.

Column 5: My description of the contents of the page.

The useful set of numbers here is obviously the one in Column 4 because returning the pages to that order places them in their original order (see tables tinted yellow, below). By returning the pages to their original order, it's clear that pages 846-966 are simply the county "at large" (or, as Ancestry.com puts it, "Not Stated"). Only pages 966-970 are the Town of Springfield.
