There are twenty-three cantons (plural kantone, singular kanton),
three of which are divided into half-cantons (halb-kantone).
The "Year" is either the year the canton joined the Helvetic Confederation
or, in the case of half-cantons, the year the canton was split.

2Basel-Landschaft (Basel-Country) and Basel-Stadt (Basel-City) are half-cantons which, together, constitute Canton Basel.
3Nidwalden and Obwalden are half-cantons which, together, constitute Canton Unterwalden.
