Only Capt. John's two eldest sons, John Jr. and James, were of age when he was living in Christian Co., KY. These two unmarried sons are taxed as living with their father in the 1797, 1799, 1800, and 1802 Censuses. But note the increase, then the apparent loss, of land-holdings by Capt. John between 1802 and 1803, at the same time that the number of adult males in the household rises, from 1801 to 1802, then drops back down from 1802 to 1803. What is happening is that Capt. John owns the 160/165 acre parcel of 2nd rate land and the 100 acre parcel of 3rd rate land on the Pond River, while son, James, owns the 150 and 100 acre parcels of 2nd rate land on the Pond River, and son, John Jr., owns the 80 acre parcel in Henderson Co. (See the sons' family group sheets for more details on their tax records.) It is more than likely that they were all living together (the sons were not yet married), and for whatever reason, the tax collector chose to treat them as one household in some years and as multiple households in other years. 3. A. Said to be brothers of Charles THOMSON, Secretary of the Continental Congress, but there is no evidence supporting this allegation. B. John Thompson shows up on the tax rolls of Cape Girardeau Dist., Missouri Territory, by 1814 (Darnell, 1999); and some have taken this to mean he moved to Missouri ca. 1813/14. However, his land in Christian Co., KY, was sold in 1808 and his daughter, Sarah, was married in Cape Girardeau Co. in 1809, which facts lead me to believe they left KY for MO in 1808. This earlier date also clears up a problem in the 1810 Census of Christian Co., KY, because there are too few John THOMPSONs on the census to account for all the John THOMPSONs thought to be living in the county, based on other evidence. The only member of this family who appears to still be in Christian Co. for the 1810 Census is Capt. John's daughter, Polly, and her husband Uriah WILLIAMS. |
