Margaret's age cannot possibly be correct if she is the mother of the younger
children, and other censuses confirm she is younger. Robert is surnamed
YOUNG, not STROUP.

It is likely that some age inflation has taken place with respect to Margaret.
8. 1880 Census (indexed at FamilySearch.org): Margaret
not found. Robert YOUNG is living with Margaret's daughter, Ellen
(STROUP) RECKARD.

at Ancestry.com).

...
I traced Daniel through the city directories. He was last
listed in 1867 and his wife was first listed in 1870... She [Margaret]
died between 1878 and 1880 (she was listed in the 1879 city directory,
but not on the 1880 census)...
Children:
1. Probably George, but definitely a son born 1810-20. The
St Michael's records list George b 11/22/1818, which would fit, but in
one set of records the parents are listed as Jacob
& Margaret and in another Daniel
and Margaret.
2. William b 11/8/1821
3. Daniel b 10/5/1824
4. Theodore b 9/4/1826
5. Robert Young b 7/1/1829 ("adopted," but used the surname Young
when he moved out)
6. Ellen Elisabeth b 10/10/1830
7. Amanda b 4/23/1833
8. John Washington b 2/22/1835 d 10/1835
9. Jones (not Jonas) Wistar b 12/8/1835
10. Ann Wistar b 6/28/1840
11. Thomas Forrest Betton b 4/4/1842...
The birth dates come from baptismal records which were all at St
Michael's Evangelical Lutheran Church. |
The explanation for the disparity in names of George's father is that our
subject is Jacob Daniel STROUP. Germans traditionally used their
middle name as their call name, so presumably he is Jacob Daniel, not Daniel
Jacob. |
