Johann Jacob STRAUB, a.k.a., Jacob STROUP I
Maria FRENSCH
Catharine __?__
Nancy HAMBRIGHT

NOTICE:  paper descendants of our subject are participating in the STRAUB Y-chromosome DNA Surname Project.  They have a tight genetic match to the Haplogroup I1-L592 descendants of Johann Pieter STRAUB, the 1733 immigrant to Philadelphia.  This DNA match resurrects and supports the assertion that our subject is the Jacob STRAUB who is son of Johann Pieter STRAUB (i.e., that he's the minor child, Jacob, who accompanied his parents on the crossing).

WARNING:  Secondary sources disagree as to the wives of our subject.  Some say Catharine was Catharine MASTERS; some say she was Catharine BIRKHOVER; and some say she is simply Maria Catharina FRENCH (i.e., that Jacob had two wives, not three).  Another says he had a wife, Betsy, who was the mother of Peter and Elizabeth.  I have not done the research necessary to determine which is correct.  It is certain he had at least two wives, if for no other reason than that no one woman could bear children over a span of 32 years (i.e., from 1746 to 1778), and the 13-year break in child births between ca. 1750 and 1763 would appear to signal the change from one wife to the next.  However, the roughly seven-year break between the births of Margaret and Peter is not wide enough to positively indicate a change in wife, but if there were two earlier wives, that would be the logical place for the change.  In general, the early generations of this family are not well documented, and much of what I have comes from secondary sources, so caveat emptor.

3 free white males 16 or over in or bef. 1774 = Jacob (b. 1722)

2 free white males 15 or under 1774-1790 =

2 free white females all ages in or bef. 1790 = Nancy (b. 1740)
= Hannah (b. 1767)
Nancy was alive in 1800 when Jacob wrote his will, so presumably she is one of the females.  Hannah did not marry until 1793, so one would expect her to still be living at home, which also means the other daughters were married — unless, of course, some of the unmarried daughters, including Hannah, were working out of the home, in which case it's hard to tell who the second female is.

1 male 45 or over in or bef. 1755 = Jacob (b. 1722/24)
1 female 26-44 1755-1774 = Nancy (b. 1740)
Nancy must be fibbing about her age.  Where is son Daniel?  He did not marry until 1803.  I would doubt this household is our subjects, but there's no other with potential to be them.

I am a descendant of Daniel STROUP and Mary aka Polly GOODSON...  I... have had personal contact with many people in the area of NC that my ancestors lived.  I still own land in the area that I inherited from my grandmother who was born in 1884... as a child I spent many hours visiting with my grandmother and people in the area.  According to family history Jacob divided his land between all 7 sons not just AdamDaniel sold his share sometime after 1812 and moved to what is now Cherryville.  He lived and farmed his 110 acres from 1804 [1814] to the time he sold the land.  There are many decendents still in the same area.  I have a lead on the grave of Jacob and his wife Nancy Rhyne but have not been able to check it out...  from the old home place Adam's farm was NW, Phillip on the east, Daniel on the SW etc...
Adam was the oldest son so therefore he was given a chance at family land first.  Peter who was born in 1750 opted to stay in MD because of the girl he married so the story goes.  Jacob, Adam, and Peter all fought in the Rev. War along with a grandson named Jacob.  Old Jacob's land was divided among the sons before his death as they came of age or married.  Daniel who was born in 1779 would have been 21 the year of the census, and also the year old Jacob decided to make it legal.  I figure he cut out a chunk of land for each of them, and they each lived on it and farmed.  The witness to the land sale to Daniel was witnessed by a Michael DELLINGER who was a neighbor and relative by marriage.  Descendents of the DELLINGER clan still live next to my land in NC.  The STROUP, DELLINGER, HARRELSON families have remained connected through the years. Daniel's daughter Nancy (my relative) married a HARRELSON.
