Secondary sources have asserted that our subject is Johann Peter STROUP (b. 1760), son of (Mathias) Andreas STROUP & Catharina DELONG, but if (Mathias) Andreas is truly a son of 1733 immigrant Johann Pieter STRAUB, DNA differences make our subject's connection to (Mathias) Andreas impossible because Johann Pieter's descendants are Haplogroup I1a.  The alternative is that (Mathias) Andreas is not Johann Pieter's son, and there is an argument to be made for that case (because, among other things, all of Johann Pieter's other presumed sons have saint's name Johann).  DNA testing does prove that our subject is related to Theobald/Dewald STRAUB, who may be a grandson of Andreas STRAUB & Anna Catharina SPRINGER.

Secondary sources name our subject, "John Peter," but I have found no primary record calling our subject John or John Peter; I have found him only as Peter.  Nor have I found him in any record surnamed STRAUB, but we know either he or his father or grandfather must have started out a STRAUB, especially given the proven connection to Theobald.

I have found no primary record where our subject is called John or John Peter; I have found him only as Peter.  It may be that Kutztown existed in 1795, though Kutztown Borough was not incorporated until 1815, but it is in Maxatawny Twp., not Greenwich Twp.  So… which is correct, the town or the township?

2.  1790 Census Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com):  not found.  Peter was old enough to be married by 1790, but Rosanna wasn't.  The fact that Peter does not show up as head-of-household suggests that he was either single or widowed at this point, though he could have been married; either way, he is obviously living with a family where someone else is head-of-household.

Son, George, as yet unmarried, is the eldest male in the household, so he is the head.  Son Peter is not married yet, either, so he should be at home, too.  I can't figure who the younger males are because they weren't in the household in 1830.

11.  Excerpt of family information written by Samuel L. STROUP, grandson of our subjects (courtesy of Rita Rogers Nowack):

Grandmother continued the farming for some years until the children began leaving home to work for themselves.  There were eleven children, 5 boys and 6 girls, namely, William who left home.  Several years after leaving they heard from him, but afterwards they lost track of him, and his whereabouts are unknown.  Jacob went to Illinois and died there.  John went to Brooklyn, NY and died there. George and Peter remained in Perry County and died there. Susan married William Jacobs, went to Ohio and died there. Mary married Benjamin Hollenbaugh, went to Ohio and died there. Sallie married David Disinger, went to Ohio and died there. Jane married Henry Briner, went to Illinois and is still living. Grandmother Stroup remained in Perry County and her sons George and Peter looked after her wants until her death, which occurred March 27, 1864, at the ripe age of eighty-four years, four months, and eight days.  She was buried in Union Cemetery, Blain, Perry County, Pa., not beside her husband, as there was no room there, but lays beside her son George who died later.

Samuel must have been writting before Rosanna Jane (STROUP) BRINER died in 1911.  He fails to mention Elizabeth or Margaret, though they must be two of the six daughters, so presumably Elizabeth and Margaret are deceased.  But did he not know of Henry?  The early censuses support that our subjects did, indeed, have six sons, not five.

12.  Robert L. Stroup.  1993.  One Consanguineous Pennsylvania Straub Family.  MS, Hazen, ND.  564 pp.  (available on LDS microfilm or fische).  The "consanguineous family" is that of our subject.  I have not seen the entire publication, but Stephen Stroup has kindly sent me scans of some key pages, one of which is the Pedigree Chart showing the ancestry of Peter.  The "Andreas STRAUB & Catherina" on the chart have been presumed to be Andreas STRAUB & Catharina DELONG, but could they be Andreas STRAUB & Anna Catharina SPRINGER?  The book, as far as I can tell, is undocumented, so we don't know on what basis connections were made (or the source of Peter's birthyear, which is critical if correct).  What we do know is that DNA proves our subject is not descended from Johann Pieter STRAUB & Maria Barbara.

[By the 1830 census,] John had already left home.  A very short history written in 1910, from Samuel L. Stroup, a grandson of Peter and Rosina, states John went to New York and died there.  William had also already left home - possibly to Canada.  The family did hear from him once but not after.
