3.  1860 Census Index/Images (online at Genealogy.com, Image #357 of 684 — mis-indexed "Strout"):  Scalp Level P.O., Paint Twp., Somerset Co., PA, Roll M653_1183 (Book 1), 1295/1297, p. 353A, PN 189, enumerated 31 Jul 1860, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1860 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):¤•

4.  1870 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com):  not found, and I really looked, including a page-by-page search of Paint Twp.  I didn't find their son, Gottlieb STRAUB, their daughter, Christina STRAUB (not yet married), or their MAUCK/MOCK in-laws, either, which makes me think a section of Paint Twp. must have been missed by the enumerator (or the pages lost afterwards).

5.  Tombstone Readings:  Lutheran Cemetery, Paint Borough, Paint Township, Somerset Co., PA (online at the Somerset County PAGenWeb site; contributed by Donna Knupp):
Stroub, Jacob
July 29, 1865
Aged 89 yr. 5 days
Stroub, Margaret
Nov. 15, 1856
Age 57 yr. 1 mo. 18 days
These stones are believed to be (and reasonably should be) our subjects, but they must have been badly mis-read because 1) the census clearly shows both Jacob and Margaret were younger — in Jacob's case, much younger — than indicated; and 2) Margaret was still alive in the 1860 census, so she cannot have died in 1856.
