including a file giving this obituary in the Notes for our subject:
| Obituary - Idaho Springs, Co. Paper - Friday September 1, 1961:
Services held in Denver for Sheriff of Years Ago
Albert E. Straub, 96, sheriff of Clear Creek county from
1913 until 1921, died Sunday evening in Colorado General hospital two weeks
ago following a heart attack, and shortly after his entry to the hospital
he developed double pneumonia. Funeral services were held Wednesday
afternoon from the chapel of the Olinger Mortuary at 16th and Boulder in
Denver, with Masonic services at Crown Hill Cemetery, by Memorial Lodge
No. 1, A.F. & A.M., of Denver, for Idaho Springs Lodge No. 26, A.F.
& A.M. of which Mr. Staub had been a member for many years.
Mr. Straub was born Sept. 27, 1865 at St. Joseph, Missouri.
He came to Idaho Springs with his family when he was 9 years old and was
educated here. He operated a livery stable and ore hauling business
here for several years, and also served on the city council for five years.
His livery barns were located just across the present Idaho street (which
was then the C. & S. Railroad tracks) from the railroad depot.
The depot building is now leased by the school district and is used for
the Kindergarten classes. In addition to hauling supplies to the
mines and ore from the mines to the mills (of which there were several)
in Idaho Springs, Straub's livery business also included buggies, carriages
and landaus which were rented in those days as automobiles are rented nowadays,
and he also had riding horses for hire.
Mr. Straub was elected sheriff of Clear Creek county in 1913 and
after serving this initial term he was re-elected for three more two-year
terms, serving as sheriff from 1913 until 1921. While he was sheriff
he lived at Georgetown and operated a saw mill along with a coal, wood
and ice business. He declined to be a canidate for the office again
and shortly thereafter, in 1922, moved to Denver where he took a job as
guard at the county and city of Denver jail. He remained at the jail
as guard until his retirement in 1935.
On his 95th birthday last year, of the hundreds of birthday greeting
cards he received, one was from Mrs. Dwight Eisenhower extending him "warmest
greetings and best wishes on you(r) 95th birthday". Though it has
been nearly 40 years since Mr. Straub left Idaho Springs to move to Denver,
the name 'Struab' still lives on in Clear Creek County thru two nephews
living here, Irving Straub of Idaho Springs and George Straub
of Georgetown. Mr. Straub's wife Carrie, whom he married in
Denver in 1894, died four years ago. Surviving are three sons, Tom
M. Straub, of Denver, Brigadier General R.J. Straub, U.S. Marine
Corps (retired) Honolulu, Hawaii, and Captain C.T. Straub, U.S.
Navy (retired) of San Diego, California. He is also survived by 7
grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Burial - Crown Hill Cemetery. |
