I've tried to identify David S. HOPKINS as one of Melinda's relatives, but I cannot find a likely David among her known kin, so he may simply be a boarder and the common surnames just a coincidence.  Melinda's first cousin, Samuel Holt HOPKINS, married a FAY, but I cannot make a connection to Franklin.

There's so much wrong with this record that at first I didn't think it could be our subject, but it has to be — the only other SCRUBY in Michigan is a Charles in Mackinac County.  Or are we wrong about Melinda's full name?  Could she be "Eliza Melinda," instead of, "Charity Melinda"?  The children's father was born in England and their mother in Canada.
