Daniel? ROTA
Maria Liberata Eulogia FISHER
WARNING:  consider this page highly tentative.  The census record barely resembles our subjects, yet they are the only couple in the entire census that comes close, and it is the kind of muddled record you get in a hotel or boarding house where the informant may have little personal knowledge of the residents.  Arguing against the census record being our couple:  the surname is RODAN, not ROTA, and Eulogia is too old by a decade.  Arguing for the census record being our couple:  the location, the rarity of the name Eulogia, the phonetic similarity of RODAN and ROTA (to someone who spoke neither Italian or Spanish), and the wealth of Daniel — the FISHERs were fabulously wealthy, and their children married well.  And I wonder if Eulogia's children weren't adopted, as opposed to illegitimate.

1.  Email from Rondi Frankel (28 May 2009):
There is a baptismal record for Maria Liberata Eulogia, daughter - possibly illegitimate - of Liberata Ceseña and William Sturgis Hinckley, at Mission San Jose, on 23 April 1848. The record number is 10827, found at the Huntington Library site mission records.
William FISHER was still living in 1848, so unless he had divorced Liberata (unlikely given that they were Catholic), Maria is not "illegitimate."  As long as William & Liberata were legally married when Maria was born, the law recognizes her as William's legitimate daughter, regardless of who her biological actually father was.

This enumerator obviously hadn't a clue how the visitation numers were to be used, so there's some question as to just where this "household" begins and ends.  Eulogia should be 22, not 32, but this could easily be enumerator error, if not initially, then when transferring his field notes to the census schecdules.

Amelia is Eulogia's apparently illegitimate daughter.  In the 1870 census, Amelia is living with Liberata.  On the other hand, if so, Amelia should give her mother's birthplace as California, not Baja.  So, is Amelia adopted?

The grandmother here is Liberata (CESEÑA) FISHER BULL PIATTI, not "Navaretta Beattie."  Amelia, Fred, and Annette all appear to be Eulogia's illegitimate children, except that, if so, they should give their mother's birthplace as California, not Mexico.  Are they adopted?
