Daniel Messenger, the pioneer settler of Harwinton, from Hartford in January 1730, was 'first in age and position' among the early settlers.  (Chipman's History of Harwinton, pp. 27-30.)  He was commissioned captain of the train band of Harwinton by the General Assembly held at Hartford, 10 May 1744. (Public Records of the Colony of Connecticut from May 1744 to November 1750, Charles J. Hoadley [1876], pp. 1, 38.) Daniel was the son of Samuel and Susanna (Mills) Messenger of Jamaica, Long Island; his grandfather, Andrew Messenger, appears as a signer of the 'fundamental agreement' at New Haven, Connecticut, 4 June 1639, and was an original proprietor and Magistrate of Jamaica.

Recent sources say Susanna was not surnamed MILLS (see parents page).
