As Peter and Joseph RUBLE were brothers, it is extremely likely that their wives, Achsah and Stacy McCRAY, were sisters.  As Stacy was born in 1797 (assuming that date is correct — I do not know its source), then only the two eldest sons of Daniel & Sarah (NODDING) McCRAY could be their father, namely:  Charles or Henry.  However, Henry had a daughter named Achsah who has otherwise been accounted for, leaving only Charles as their possible father.

2.  Goldene Fillers Burgner.  1992.  Washington County Tennessee Wills, 1777-1872. Southern Historical Press, Greenville, SC, p. 5.  In his will dated 15 Sep 1792, William NODDING, brother of Sarah (NODDING) McCRAY, mentions his nephew, Charles McCray, so we know that Sarah had a son, Charles.

3.  Byron Sistler & Barbara Sistler.  1990.  Index to Tennessee Wills & Administrations, 1779-1861.  Byron Sistler & Assoc., Inc., Nashville, TN.  No will of any Charles McCRAY — and not under any spelling variation that I can imagine.  (The book claims to have indexed all wills recorded in county courthouses for the State of Tennessee prior to 1862 — where those county records have survived.)

4.  Marjorie Hood Fischer.  1996.  Tennesseans before 1800, Washington County.  Frontier Press, Galveston, TX.  Anyone with kin in Washington Co., TN, before 1800 needs this book!  The book is an index, not the records themselves, but the entries are voluminous and exhaustive — and include many for the McCRAYs.  These records are available on microfilm at the Tennessee State Library in Nashville and the LDS Family History Library.  The book, page, and microfilm roll numbers are given by Fischer for each entry.  I'm here condensing those for Charles, as found on pp. 188 and 200-201:

There are more court records regarding Charles than any other McCRAY in Washington Co., possibly more than all other McCRAYs combined, which suggests he may have been an officer of the court (e.g., a J.P.).  The presence of a "Charles Sen." raises an interesting question.  For there to have been a Charles Sr., there must have been a Charles Jr.  I would think they wouldn't have bothered to call the elder one "Sr." if the younger one wasn't of age to go on record as "Jr."  However, no Jr. appears in the records.  Other than our subject, no other Charles McCRAY is known in Washington Co., TN, before 1800, and only Daniel McCRAY and our subject were old enough to have a son requiring the distinction of "Jr." before 1800.  And as our subject is Daniel's son, that leaves only Charles to be the father of Charles Jr., who would have to have been one of his earliest children.
