1.  Interview of Nina Gale (Straub) Matthiesen, subject's niece (and my mother), who lived with subject's sister, Josephine (STRAUB) PETERS, in Washington, DC, while attending art school there in the 1930s.  Family tradition has Bess working as private secretary to President Herbert Hoover (or something similar — I may have gotten the legend wrong).  I contacted the Herbert Hoover Library, and they said they have no record of her being his secretary, but they replied rather quickly, so I don't know how thoroughly they searched.
