| In a biographical sketch of Henry Dunster, first President of Harvard
College, who came to America in 1640, there is mention of the publication
of the Bay Psalm Book, which appeared in two editions, in 1640 and
1647. It was the first book printed in North America on the first
printing press in North America, which was set up in President Dunster's
house in Cambridge, MA. The translation of the psalms into English
was done by Richard Mather of Dorchester and John Eliot and Thomas Weld
of Roxbury. The new version was not entirely satisfactory, so it
was given to President Dunster, a master of Greek and Hebrew, for further
improvement. Associated with Dunster in that effort was Richard
Lyon. |

the New-England version of the Psalms. |
