I think the Cripple Creek birthplace may be romanticized.  At the time Lucy was born, her father was a law student at the University of Colorado in Boulder.  A family letter (by Lucy's maternal grandmother) mentions that Nina came home to her parents in Missouri about a week before Lucy was born and that she was born there.  This is consistent with the fact that Nina gives Missouri as Lucy's birthplace in the 1900 census.
