According to the births of his children from 1841 to 1852, all were born in Montford's Cove of northern Rutherford Co., where he had obtained a "situation," and the

p. 19 1850 Census there lists him as a teacher.  At a later date, he was a teacher in District Eight in Catawba Co., and by 1860, he had married, secondly, Mary Elizabeth Fisher, his sister-in-law, and they were living in Lincoln Co., in Spring Hill township, where he was a Methodist Protestant minister.  Lincoln County marriage bonds to 1868, show that he was the officiating minister for seven couples.  In 1870, he was a schoolteacher in Dallas township of Gaston Co., and in 1880, a teacher in Ironton township of Lincoln Co., (these townships closely adjoined) and stated that his father was born in Va., and his mother in N.Y.  In the 1883 Lincoln Co. elections, he was shown as Rev. J. A. Huggins.
