Died October 7, 2003 at home.  He was born January 12, 1912, in Waukeshaw, WI, the son of B. Smith and Maude (Childs) Hopkins, and was a graduate of Urbana High School, Albion College, John Hopkins University School of Medicine, and did his residency at Vanderbilt University.

He was a physician in Internal Medicine at the Carle Clinic from 1940-1980.  He became an Eagle Scout in 1926, was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, member of Board of Governors, Carle Clinic 1956-1963, chairman 1962, member and president Board of Trustees, Carle Foundation Hospital, member and Board of East Central Illinois Health Systems Agency, member and Executive Secretary Statewide Health Coordinating Council, member and past president Champaign Medical Society, member and past president Exchange Club of Urbana, member Illinois State Medical Society, member American Medical Assoc., American College Physicians, American Rheumatism Society, Urbana Golf and Country Club, and a member of First Congregational Church of Champaign, IL.

He was married in 1936 to Louise Varty, in East Orange, NJ, and she preceded him in death March 5, 1999.  He was also preceded in death by his parents; 1 son, B Smith Hopkins III; his brother, Harvey Childs Hopkins; and one step-grandson.  Surviving are his wife, Frances Fairchild, whom he married November 24, 2000; sons, Stephen Hopkins of Sheridan, WY, and Jonathan Hopkins of Kalamazoo, MI; step-daughters, Judy Schmisseur of Champaign, IL, Sandra Gould of Kainville, IL, Nancy Sulliger of Eugene, OR; 7 grandchildren; 6 step-grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; 8 step-great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Saturday, October 11, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the Morgan Memorial Home, 1304 Regency Dr. West, Savoy, IL with Rev. Dr. Terry Harter officiating. Private interment Woodlawn Cemetery, Urbana, IL. A reception will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Windsor of Savoy, 401 Burwash, Savoy, IL. Memorial contributions may be made to an organization of the donor's choice.

Smith Hopkins Jr., ’32, on Oct. 7, 2003 in Savoy, IL.  A 1936 graduate of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Smith was an internal medicine physician at the Carle Clinic Department of Medicine from 1940 to 1980.  He was past president of the Carle Foundation Hospital board and Champaign County Medical Society, executive secretary of the Statewide Health Coordinating Council, and chairman of the Carle Clinic board and the Illinois State Medical Society.  He belonged to the First Congregational Church in Champaign.  Smith is survived by his wife, Frances, two sons, three step-daughters, seven grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren.
