| *In the 1820 Census, the third column is
age class 16-18 and the fourth column is age class 16-25; therefore, any
individual in column three is duplicated in column four. By subtracting
the number in column three from the number in column four, you can create
an age class "19-25." |
What happened to Lewis and Andrew? They
are military age; are they in the service? Have they been apprenticed
out? Or did the census taker or transcriber make an error?
Where is "Son B" (b. 1791/2)? He is just old enough to be off
on his own. Or has he mistakenly been placed in the category with
Pinkney?
Pinkney did not marry until 1824, so he is at home.
Either Mary is fibbing about her age (not unlikely), or the source
giving her birth year as 1773 is wrong.
By 1820, daughter Sally is married and gone to Missouri. Mary
Ann didn't get married until 1825, so she is at home. Apparently,
Susan hasn't married yet, either.

Neither Isaac nor William have yet married, so they are probably the two
older males still at home. Both Sarah and Mary Ann are married, so
presumably the young woman is Susan. Can't figure the youngest male.
This is pushing Mary's fecundity to the limit. There is always the
possiblity of a married child returned home with a baby, with or without
their spouse. Very young children in the home of an older couple
are often grandchildren.

| *The county was divided into just two districts:
from 1804 to 1806, into North and South Districts; and, beginning in 1807,
into East and West Districts. The change tells us that Simon was
in the southeast quadrant of early Christian County, which later became
the southwest quadrant of Todd Co., when it was formed in 1820. This
location is confirmed by the location of the West Fork of the Red River
in today's southwestern Todd Co. |
The 16-20 year old male appearing in 1808 implies that the eldest son of
Simon has just turned 16, which would mean the lad was born 1791/2.

13. Anon. 1986. Family Histories: Christian
County, Kentucky, 1797-1986. Christian County Genealogical Society,
Hopkinsville, KY. On p. 63, in an entry fo Barbara Ann BARKER and
John Couts ASKEW:
| ...Mrs Askew was an ardent collector of antique furniture and china
and an advocate of preserving old buildings. Her most challenging
project was restoration of the Simon French home on land purchased
by her great grandfather, John Walton Barker in 1855. The house was
built in 1796-98 by Mr. French (1764-1831) who obtained the land
as a reward for his service in the Revolutionary War. Known as the
Brick
House, it reportedly is the oldest brick house in Christian County.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Askew are buried in a family cemetery adjacent
to the property, and Simon French and his wife, Mary, are
buried nearby. The house presently is
occupied by Mrs. Askew's oldest daughter, Barbarker Askew Haynes (1912)
and her husband, Kit H. Haynes... |
It would certainly seem to be a misnomer to call the French Family Graveyard
the "Askew" Cemetery. It's unclear from the article whether these
constitute one graveyard or two, but if one, it should at least be known
as the "French-Askew" Family Graveyard.
