| I cannot account for the following source (LDS Fiche #6142831).
The data simply do not jibe with Francis DIDDLEBAUGH having died and left
Anna a widow by 1870. But clearly Anna was a widow in the 1870 Census,
and clearly she remarried in 1871, to Charles BROWN. |

I thoroughly searched the LDS 1880 census index CDs and could not find
a Karl/Carl or Fredrick/Frederick born ca. 1879 with surname remotely approaching
DIDDLEBAUGH — anywhere.

This record is very hard to figure. In the 1850 Census, Francis's
birthplace was given as Germany, not PA, but that's a minor problem compared
to the rest. It seems fairly obvious that Janette is the daughter
of Francis & Finey. The big problem is the other girl and teenage
boy. Francis was in the U.S. in the 1850 Census, unmarried and without
children (living with his parents), so he cannot be the parent of any child
born in Württemberg. Nor are these Francis's siblings because
they were not in his parents' household in 1850. Given their birthplace,
we would immediately suspect that Polly and Coonrad were Finey's children
from an earlier marriage, especially given Finey's age. Then again,
while Finey's easily old enough to be Polly's mother, it's a stretch to
make her Coonrad's mother, unless Finey is lying about her age in the census,
which widow's are certainly prone to doing. Are Coonrad and Polly
siblings of Finey? Or is Polly her daughter and Coonrad her brother?
In any case, we would expect that Coonrad, at least, would be using his
own surname. I suspect the two did have different surnames, and that
suspicion is supported by the household next door. Francis and his
family are living next door to Francis's father, Jacob
DIDDLEBAUGH. Living with Jacob is his grandson, Joseph KAHLE,
but the enumerator does not give Joseph a surname, with the implication
that Joseph is a DIDDLEBAUGH, when in fact he was not (in the 1850 and
1870 censuses, he was Joseph KAHLE). I think the enumerator made
the same mistake here, that Polly and Coonrad were not surnamed DIDDLEBAUGH.
This error is most unfortunate because their surname could have told us
a great deal, especially as Francis died before 1870, so we have no second
chance to find out.

Ann is widowed and Janette is orphaned. Given how briefly Francis
was married to Ann, it's not surprising that Janette chose to live with
her grandfather, rather than her step-mother, after the death of her father.

Odds are that George is Ann's brother. The other relationships are
hard to figure, unless the census-taker made some errors with either ages
or birthplaces — or surnames, and I'll wager Amelia is Emma's mother and
that her surname (and John's) is not STOLL.

The younger Janette is Jacob's granddaughter; the elder Janette's is Jacob's
daughter. Francis STAHL/STOLL is probably a brother of Ann (STOLL)
DIDDLEBAUGH.
