5a. Anon. Thursday, 16 Mar 1916. "Lad Charged Cruel
Treatment to Mother." The News (Frederick, MD), vol. XXXIX,
no. 129, p. 3 (online at Ancestry.com):
LAD CHARGED CRUEL TREATMENT TO MOTHER
12-year Old Martinsburg Boy Picked Up Here —
Cared For by Humane Society.
Leaving his home in Martinsburg and coming all the way
to Frederick because he was treated cruelly by his mother, Julian Corbin,
a twelve-year-old boy, was picked up by Chief of Police Bruchey last Friday
and was returned to West Virginia authorities yesterday. When he
reached home, he was placed in charge of an agent of a Humane Society.
The boy arrived in Brunswick on Thursday afternoon
and slept over night there under a lumber pile. The next morning
he came into Frederick and made friends with Christopher Woerner, who notified
the Chief of Police of the younster's (sic) case. That night
the boy was taken to jail and the pathetic story of his experience at home
was told to Sheriff Roderick. On his arm, Julian displayed a large
stab-wound which he said was inflicted by a pen-knife by his mother.
He did not want to return home, for he declared that his mother had left
her husband and was living with another man.
The sheriff searched the lad and on him were found
a pistol, a flash-light, a box of cartridges and twenty-nine dollars. |

The
News (Frederick, MD). Vol. XXXIX, No. 130, p. 3 (online at Ancestry.com):
|
Hearing Tomorrow
Julian Corbin, the Martinsburg boy who told a pitiful
tale to Sheriff Roderick, will be given a hearing in the West Virginia
city Saturday morning at ten o'clock. It is likely that he will be
sent to a reform school. The Martinsburg authorities misunderstood
that Sheriff Roderick desired to care for the boy, but the Sheriff said
this morning he had no such intentions. |
