Among secondary sources, there is a great deal of inconsistency with regard to Bolen's first name and, more significantly, with regard to his mother's surname — and the two problems are related. Some say Bolen's mother is Penelope JOHNSON; others say she is Penelope BOLLING; some say both, with one being the maiden name and the other being the name of a prior husband (take your pick which is which). At play here is an apparent desire for her to be a BOLLING because that admits of some illustrious ancesters. As Bolen is not my ancestor, I have the luxury of remaining indifferent. ;-)

There is an 11-year gap here. Is Joseph really their son?

Winifred would be age 46 in 1770, making it not impossible that he is her son, but extremely improbable. Or did Bolen remarry to a second, younger wife?
