2.  1840 Census:  It appears our subject was enumerated twice, with the two enumerations not matching exactly.  While this happens rarely, it is not the first time I've seen it happen, and I've seen worse discrepancies between the two enumerations (e.g., Christian STRAUB in 1850).  I checked 1850 to see if there was another Thomas BROWN household that could account for the second one here, and I found none.  What most clearly unites these records is the subject's occupation, which is very rare.
