Lineages and Results of Y-chromosome DNA Testing for Haplogroup I1 THOMPSON
(last updated 30 Jul 2009)
INTRODUCTION
As an aid to research on the Haplogroup I1 THOMPSONs, I've compiled a table of all the test subjects I could find who were Haplogroup I1 and surnamed THOMPSON, THOMSON, THOMPSEN, or THOMSEN.  I've grouped matching individuals and given as much lineage information as was supplied or that I could uncover.

I would like to encourage anyone to please not hesitate to contact me (address in navigation bar at the bottom of the page) if you can add to the table, especially to improve the lineages, correct any errors I've made, or alert me when a newly tested individual needs to be added to the table.  And I strongly recommend those interested in the genealogy or DNA testing of Haplogroup I1 THOMPSONs to join the THOMPSON-DNA Mailing List where we can discuss these topics.

RECOMMENDATIONS
A study of this table makes it clear that 12 and 25 markers are simply not enough to determine whether individuals are closely related or not.  I urge everyone to upgrade to at least 37 (preferably 67) markers.  This upgrade is especially needed for those who are modal or near modal at 12 or 25 markers.  I also recommend that if there are any in your "group" who have tested the nine "advanced" markers, that you test these markers, also.  These are the nine markers not tested by FTDNA, but tested by SMGF, which has a huge online database.  These nine markers can also be tested at FTDNA, from among the "Advanced" STR tests.

CONVERSION FACTORS
Some people were tested at labs other than FamilyTreeDNA (FTDNA), for example, DNA Heritage (DNA-H).  These labs test a different suite of markers than FTDNA, but most are comparable, so those results are included.  Test results of some markers from these labs need to undergo conversion factors to be comparable to FTDNA results.  Unfortunately, I've no way of knowing whether these factors were applied correctly, if at all, in the table at ThompsonFamilies.org, unless these individuals contact me and share their results as originally supplied by the testing companies.

GENETIC DISTANCE
The Genetic Distance (GD) between two individuals is the number of mutation events that separate them.  Most of the time, GD can be easily determined by a simple count of their numerical difference; that is, if your counts match at the level of 35/37, the GD between you is two.  There are certain mutations events, however, that can change the count by more than a single digit in one mutation event.

For Marker YCAIIab, a mutation from the modal values of 19|21 to 21|21 or 19|19 is the result of a recLOH mutation (a recombinant loss of heterozygosity), that is, a loss of one allele with a duplication of the other, so it is counted as a single mutation, as seen in Group R below.

Any mutation in Marker 389i is reflected in Marker 389ii, so the same change in both is counted as one mutation, as seen in Group V below.

VARIETIES of HAPLOGROUP I
The lack of SNPs defining useful subclades of Haplogroup I has led Nordtvedt to create varieties based on STR markers (see his Excel spreadsheet for modals of these varieties).  For a table showing modal haplotypes for Hg I varieties in FamilyTreeDNA marker order, please also see my HTML transcription of Nordtvedt's spreadsheet.

DYS455 = 8 is exclusive to and universal in I1, which makes it essentially as useful as SNP testing for proving Haplogroup I1.  YCAIIa,b = 19,21 is universal in, though not exclusive to, Haplogroup I1.

I have only just (6 Dec 2008), roughly separated the Haplogroup I1 THOMPSONS into the two major varieties of I1, that is, AngloSaxon (AS) and Norse/ultraNorse (N/uN).  The detailed variety of many individuals is not determinable because they haven't tested enough markers.  The two most consistent differences between AS and N/uN are in two markers:  DYS511 and DYS462.  In AS, these are usually 9,12; and in N/uN these are usually 10,13 — though there are exceptions.  In the table below, I've highlighted the table cells for the AS values in kelly green and for the N/uN values in royal blue.

To pick up Marker DYS511, you need to test the 38-67 Marker panel, and to pick up Marker DYS462, you have to either be tested at SMGF or order it from among the "Advanced" markers at FTDNA.  I would encourage all Haplogroup I1's to test these markers.  Once more people haved tested more markers, I'll break the table down into more specific varieties.

Haplogroup I1-AS is the most common variety of I1, which means the I1 modal haplotype is also the I1-AS modal haplotype.

MY MOTIVATION
For decades, my GGG-grandfather, Thomas THOMPSON (1797-1872), has been a genealogical brick wall for his descendants.  It is my hope that Y-DNA testing will at least tell in which THOMPSON family we belong.  After years of searching, we found a patrilineal descendant of Thomas who consented to being Y-DNA tested.  We do not yet have a match, but surely eventually we will.  We have determined that his line is Haplogroup I1, which is at least consistent with an old newspaper clipping stating that Thomas's father, Peter THOMPSON, was a Dane.

SOURCES
1.  Genealogy and DNA test results of my THOMPSON cousin, Kit #122567 (Group I, below).
2.  The THOMPSON DNA Project based at FamilyTreeDNA (as of 4 Feb 2009).
3.  The DNA Results page at ThompsonFamilies.org (page last updated 4 Sep 2007).
4.  The Ysearch database (as of 22 Sep 2008).

Some individuals occur in more than one database, and I believe I have managed to tell which ones are the same individual.  Where I couldn't tell, the admin of the THOMPSON project kindly supplied the informaiton.

Red labels indicate markers that typically mutate more frequently than those labeled in black.
If you have scrolled so far down the table that you cannot see the column labels, just hover your cursor over a cell and the marker number will appear.

1 #122567 of Group I has been deep SNP tested with these results:
P30+ M253+  M21- M227- P109- P259-
The positive SNP test results prove he is I1, not I2.  The negative results for M21, M227, P109, and P259 rule out any known subclade of I1, meaning he is root/ancestral I1*.

1 Using Jim Cullen's Haplo-I Subclade Predictor, the strongest match for Group S is I-L22-N=>39%.  Apparently Cullen hasn't worked P109 into the predictor yet.
2 #148837 of Group S has been deep SNP tested with the result that he is L22+ and P109+, proving he is I1d1.
3 While #93187 has not been deep SNP tested, another member of this family has been, with the result that he is L22+, but P109- and P259-, indicating he is I1d.
4 #93187 in Group X has a 66/67 match with the modal haplotype for the TIPTON family, so it appears he must have an NPE in his patrilineal line.  The further back the NPE occurred, the more THOMPSONs will be affected, so this individual needs to test cousins, until he locates the generation in which the NPE occurred.  My thanks to Robert TIPTON, co-admin of the TIPTON project, for bringing his match with the TIPTONs to my attention.

What constitutes a match?
Matches in other surnames are usually mere coincidence, so please ignore them — I'll let you know when you shouldn't!
For 12 markers:  9 or less is a non-relative; 10-12, please see this Chart compiled by FTDNA.
For 25 markers:  21 or less is a non-relative; 22-25, please see this Chart compiled by FTDNA.
For 37 markers:  31 or less is a non-relative; 32-37, please see this Chart compiled by FTDNA.
For 67 markers:  55 or less is a non-relative; 56-67, please see this Chart compiled by FTDNA.
