Y-DNA Haplogroup I Modal Haplotypes — with Markers in FTDNA Order
Extracted from an Excel spreadsheet created by Ken Nordtvedt and online at his web site (as of 20 Jan 2008).  The research is entirely his; any errors of extraction, interpretation, or conversion are mine.  Please note that I have updated this chart to reflect the new ISOGG/FTDNA haplotree (released 5 May 2008), while Nordtvedt's chart has not been updated.

Nordtvedt's data are reformatted here as an HTML table with markers in FTDNA order for ease of use by FTNDA project admins and members.  If you are not comparing test results from FTDNA, you will likely find it easier to use Nordtvedt's original Excel spreadsheet, rather than this page.

The nine markers routinely tested by SMGF that are not part of the standard 67 markers at FTNDA (far right in the tables) are now available a la carte from FTDNA from among their Advanced tests.

Two rather strong bifurcations occur in Hg I.  One is at DYS455 (red table cells):  a value of 8 is not just characteristic of I1 (old I1a), but is virtually unique to it among European haplotypes.  Its value in I2 (old I1b) is usually 11 (less commonly 10 or, rarely, 9).  There is also a pair of markers, namely YCA-IIab (table cells also in red), whose values in I1 are universally, though not exclusively, 19,21.

Another strong bifurcation is within I1, between the more southerly AngloSaxon forms and the more northerly Norse and ultraNorse forms.  This bifurcation is exemplified by values for DYS511 and DYS462, which are 9,12 for the AngloSaxon varieties (bright green table cells) and 10,13 for the Norse/ultraNorse varieties (bright blue table cells).  [Colors of these cells added by DGM (not in Nordtvedt's spreadsheet).]

The standard STR test does not reveal the true ordering of Marker DYS385ab; by convention, the values are reported lo-hi.  A Kittler test can determine the true ordering of this paired marker, and some Hg I individuals have begun taking a Kittler test.  Nordtvedt indicates the modals based on Kittler-tested individuals by coloring his table cells green for those with lo-hi results and pink for those with hi-lo results, and I have followed suit.
Because HTML cannot duplicate the heavy cell border used for emphasis in Nordtvedt's spreadsheet, I have substituted boldface text for such cells.
