North and South Dakota became states in 1889.  There had been censuses in the Dakota Territory beginning in 1860.  There were no STRAUBs/STROUPs/etc. in the 1860 or 1870 censuses and only one in 1880, who was in a county which became part of North Dakota (q.v.).  The entire 1890 Federal census was lost.  Below, years in small text indicate no STRAUB, STROUP, etc. were found.
