Descendants of Johann Pieter STRAUB I (1695-c1770s), immigrant to Philadelphia in 1733 
(settled in PA; sons to VA and NC; spread widely westwards and southwards; most converted to STROUP)
Most of what became the State of Montana was acquired by the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.  Montana Territory was formed in 1864, and statehood was achieved in 1889.  There were territorial censuses in 1870 and 1880.  The entire 1890 census was lost.
