| STRAUBs are a rare commodity in Maryland, which was not a typical destination
for German immigrants (most STRAUBs were immigrants to the "Pennsylvania
Deutsch" region of southeastern Pennsylvania, most through the port of
Philadelphia). However, there was a Mathias
STROOP, who emigrated from Westphalia, Germany, to Maryland in 1687,
through the port of Baltimore. Whether he had any descendants beyond
two generations remains a controversy.
We do have a family of STROUPs, born in MD, who show up in Highland County, Ohio, by at least 1806, where they went on to multiply profusely. Their progenitor was Adam Michael STROUP, and we find a remnant of his family in the 1790 and 1800 censuses of Washington County (see below), but by 1810, even these last had moved on. Are these the descendants of Mathias STROOP? |
