| The region that would become the state of Illinois became part of the Northwest Territory when it was formed in 1787 and then part of Indiana Territory when it was formed in 1800. Illinois Territory was created in 1809; and, at that time, included what would become Illinois, Wisconsin, and eastern Minnesota. Illinois achieved statehood in 1818. There were territorial censuses in Illinois before 1820, but I've found no STRAUBs/etc. in them; the first STRAUB/STROUP/etc. indexed in Illinois appears in 1830. |
