Known or Presumed Descendants of Johannes
STRAUB (1683-) of Germany
(immigrant to New York in 1710, descendants surnamed STROPE / STROPES / STROUP) |
Descendants of Johann
Pieter STRAUB I (1695-c1770s), immigrant to Philadelphia in 1733
(settled in PA; sons to VA and NC; spread widely westwards and southwards; most converted to STROUP) |
Descendants of (Adam)
Michael STROUP (c1740s- ) of Maryland
(descendants settled mostly in Highland Co., OH) |
Descendants of Albert
F. STRAUB (1829-1900),
(1850 from Wuerttemberg to Ohio, then Iowa) |
Descendants of Gottlieb
TRAUB I (1814-1897) of Donaukreis, Württemberg
(three of whose sons immigrated to the U.S. in the 1860s;
settled mainly IL) |
|
| Iowa Territory was formed in 1838 from Wisconsin Territory,
where there had been a territorial census in 1838. No STRAUBs/etc.
were found in this 1838 census. A Federal census was taken in Iowa
Territory in 1840. Iowa achieved statehood in 1846. In
addition to the Federal Censuses beginning in 1850, there were state censuses
in 1851, 1852, 1885, and 1895. The entire 1890 Federal census was
lost. |
| PLEASE NOTE: Before Iowa achieved statehood in 1846, one abbreviation
for Indiana was "Ia.," and many census enumerators continued to use "Ia."
as the abbreviation for Indiana well after 1846, simply not abbreviating,
Iowa, at all. In the 1850 census, indexers at Ancestry.com have mis-interpreted
birthplace, "Ia.," as meaning, "Iowa," with the absurd result, for example,
that over 100,000 people in Indiana in 1850 are shown as born in Iowa.
So, when you find the abbreviation, "Ia.," as an individual's birthplace
in the census, use your head in interpreting whether it meant Indiana or
Iowa. |
