in Ohio in 1840 |
| Below is my attempt at extracting all CUPP/COPP/KAPP/etc. records from this census using available indices. Where known, parents of heads-of-households are given. | ||||||||

| Image numbers refer to page images online at Ancestry.com. Where a record span two census pages, the page and image numbers given are those of the page supplying the name. If a township cell is tinted grey, it means the list of names was roughly alphabetized. For an explanation of the numerical data, please see What the Numbers in the Federal Census Mean. These census data, like all government data, are in the public domain and therefore cannot be copyrighted (please see my Word on Copyright). |

| Footnotes:
1. "Dane" is an extremely rare given name, yet Dane CUPP is listed just one line above Dane MURPHY. The odds against two unrelated men having the given name Dane and being adjacent in an early census are astronomical. Dane is otherwise unknown as a given name for CUPP (it's a decidedly English given name), but it is known, if rarely, as a given name for MURPHY. My "take" on this "coincidence" is that it's due to enumerator error (when transcribing field notes onto the final enumeration) and that Mr. MURPHY is the one bearing the given name Dane while Mr. CUPP's given name is in error. Other Crawford County records (e.g., tax roles) should clear this up. |
| Search Notes:
1. In Stonelick Twp., Clermont County, there is indexed a John KAPP who appears to be John RAPP. Near him on the list is a Benjamin RAPP and a Joseph RAPP. 2. In Pleasant Twp., Marion County, there is indexed a David KAPP who appears to be David RUPP. Near him on the list is a George RUPP. |
