Biographical Sketch of James DAVIS (1755-1797)

JAMES DAVIS #2

James Davis (17 Apr 1755 - 29 Mar 1797) was a son of Walter and Martha Cunningham Davis of Augusta Co., Va.  James married Deborah Miller, daughter of Abraham Miller.  After the death of James in 1797, Deborah married Peter Ferguson.

James Davis's siblings were Margaret who married John Smith; Martha who married (1) William Long, (2) Daniel Smith, (3) Brewer Reeves; Euphemia who married Charles Donly (Donnelly); Agnes who never married; William who married Annie Caldwell; and Elizabeth married Joseph ParksBrewer Reeves was one of the first Justices of the Peace of Christian Co., and it was at his home that the first county court met in March 1797.

James and Deborah Miller Davis were the parents of William Cunningham Davis who married Anna Maria North, daughter of John North; Elizabeth [Betsy] Davis who married a Clark [Henry Clark, Jr., s/o Col. Henry Clark and Sarah JONES]; Sallie Davis married Robert Harrison; Martha Davis married an Elliott; and Abraham Miller Davis who died young.

James Davis has the first will recorded in Christian Co. and also has the oldest known tombstone.  The James Davis land was recently owned by Payne and is now owned by Silas Quarles. The brick home built about 1830 was

erected by William H. Fortson whose wife [Naomi Harrison, d/o Robert and Sallie Davis Harrison] had heired part of the James Davis land.  This home still stands today, 1985.  (Some data from an unpublished manuscript by Dr. Thomas Davis Parks, written 1878, a nephew of James Davis).
