| Zacheus Cheney
Member of Company "B" of the Mormon Battalion, Zacheus was born April 22, 1818, at Simpronius (sic), Cayuga County, New York, a son of Elijah Cheney. In 1835 the family moved to Kirtland, Ohio, where Zacheus first saw the Prophet Joseph Smith. He worked on the Temple and attended the Hebrew School. He was a member of the Nauvoo Legion and was in Nauvoo when, in February, the Saints crossed the Mississippi River. He crossed the river at Fort Madison May 3, 1846, and overtook the Saints at Mr. Pisgah, where he joined the Mormon Battalion and marched with them to California. After his discharge he remained in San Francisco and helped burn the first brick made in that city. He married Mary Ann Fisher, July 11, 1848. |
