I have just discovered a case where
a Kentucky individual, who is clearly shown from county tax rolls to have
been a major slave owner, does not have "other free persons" or
"slaves" enumerated in the 1810 census data on Broderbund Census Index
CD-313 (see also, What
the Numbers in the Federal Censuses Mean).
Broderbund's online version of this database at GenealogyLibrary.com
has the same flaw. I also checked Ancestry.com; in this case, they,
too, show the same "00" for these two census categories. Is
this some generalized attack of political correctness or something?
For the case in point, please check out the family group sheet of Capt.
John C. Clark.
I have no idea how extensive this omission is; it would have to be studied
on a case-by-case basis. Just be aware that simply because someone's
census data read "00," it doesn't mean they didn't own slaves. Tax
rolls, deeds, and/or wills — and presumably the original census pages —
should reveal the true situation with regard to ownership of slaves. |
