Some Interesting Causes of Death in Early California
Source:  My late father, A. Robert Matthiesen, was aiding my genealogical research by looking up some early Santa Clara County, California, marriage certificates for me at the San Jose Historical Museum in San Jose.  While searching, he came across some records giving causes of death, some of which he noted for their amusement value and included with the information I had requested.  He didn't note the source, but I have no doubt it's genuine.
"Died suddenly, nothing serious."

"Went to bed feeling well, but woke up dead."

"Cause of death unknown, had never been fatally ill before."

"Don't know, died without aid of physician."

"Death by blow in head with axe.
Contributary cause, another man's wife."
