Diagrammatic Maps of Knox County, Ohio, Townships
in the Census Years 1810 thru 1850
These maps are diagrammatic, that is, I have treated Knox County as if it were a perfect rectangle and the townships as if they were perfect squares.  They are not, of course, but this simplification allows me to create the maps as HTML tables, instead of bitmapped JPGs, which makes this page much faster to download.  The important thing is not the geographic precision of these maps, but that they allow you to easily track your ancestor's location in Knox County from census to census.

Ohio achieved statehood in 1803, so there was a Federal Census of Ohio in 1810; unfortunately, the 1810 census was lost, except for Washington County.  Note that Franklin, Chester, and Bloomfield Twps. became part of Morrow Co. when it was formed in 1848.  The most critical period for township formation was between the 1820 and 1830 censuses, and I am not 100% confident in the details of the maps below with regard to those changes.  I will continue to work on documenting them.

1810
1803 — Ohio achieves statehood
1808 — Knox Co. formed from Fairfield Co.
1808 — first four townships formed:  Wayne, Clinton, Morgan, and Union.

Norton (1862) and Hill (1881) disagree as to whether the southeastern corner of the county started out in Union or Morgan Twp.  I follow Norton for a variety of reasons.

  Wayne       Union

    Clinton

      Morgan

1820
1812 — Morris formed from Wayne and Clinton; Chester formed from Wayne
1815 — Miller formed from Morgan; Jackson formed from Union
1817 — Bloomfield formed from Clinton
1819 — Pike formed from Wayne and Clinton
18?? — Hilliar formed from Miller

The census included a separate listing for the county seat, Mt. Vernon.

1830
1822 — Berlin formed from Pike; Liberty formed from Clinton
1823 — Franklin formed from Chester; Milford formed from Miller; Middlebury formed from Wayne
1825 — Butler formed from Jackson; Clay formed from Morgan and Jackson; Harrison formed from Union, Morgan, and Jackson; Howard formed from Union; Monroe formed from Morris; Pleasant formed from Morgan and Clinton
1826 — Brown formed from Jefferson
1829 — Jefferson formed from Union

Brown cannot have been formed in 1826 from Jefferson if Jefferson was not formed until 1829; yet, Hill (1881) contains this anomaly.  I'll have to find another source to determine the correct dates; however, whatever the dates, it makes no difference as regards county layout at the time of the census (i.e., both townships were formed between 1820 and 1830).
