| Cornelis MELIJN/MELYN was baptised in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1600, son of Andries MELIJN/MELYN and Maria GHUEDINX-BOTENS. Cornelis was a man of courage, honor, and enormous entrepreneurial spirit who led a remarkable life. Among other things, he was Patroon of Staten Island and made no less than eleven crossings of the Atlantic in his attempts to secure the founding of a colony on that island. The life of Cornelis MELYN is a fascinating chapter in the founding of our nation. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Here, and throughout this web site, I use the Dutch versions of their names. As far as I can gather, the only reason these individuals are so often referred to in the literature by French names is that the first genealogist to work on them was, himself, French. I have little doubt that in life these people went by their Dutch names because they lived in the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium, not the French- speaking part. |
