1Jillson has me somewhere between perplexed and
astonished. How can someone who did so much work with land records
have so little (apparent) understanding of land designation? The
data he gives in the "Township" column do not represent the township, they're
the aliquot and section. The data he gives in the "Range" column
are the township and range. There's an explanation of these
terms on a page called "GLO Terms and Field Definitions" at the BLM (Bureau of Land Management)
web site [link died]. If you're used to the standard designations, Jillson's
are hard to read, so I've given the correct ones in the rightmost column.
Trouble is, Jillson hasn't given us all the data, that is, he hasn't given
us the direction of the township from the base line and which base line
was used. Perhaps he intended us to assume a baseline and assume
a direction (e.g., north), so the designations would be T1N, T2N,
T7N, etc., of some East-West base line. However, there is no standard
base line in KY, at least not as given by the map of "Principal Meridians and Base Lines" online at the BLM web site [link died], so it will
take some digging to find out what this "special" base line was.
2Yes, this record is a duplicate. I
suspect one of the aliquots is wrong, but no way to tell which one.
Also getting land in the same area: McGilbra, Eli, James, and
Frederick WYATT.
