Shirley's middle initial was "D," not "S"; and her mother's maiden name was WILLIS.  It was Nina WILLIS's maternal grandmother who was a HOPKINS.  The informant on Earl's death certificate was very likely the wife of his late wife's late brother (as the only kin living anywhere near him at the time of his death).  As she was not blood kin to either Earl or Shirley, she could easily have been mistaken about the maiden name of Earl's mother, which could explain why I've been totally unable to find her in the census.
