Robert R. Stroup, 62, died Sept. 7, 2006, at his home in Wasilla. A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. today at the Wasilla American Legion, Post 35. Call 1-907-376-3500 for directions.  Burial will be in his family's cemetery in Oklahoma.  He was born Sept. 7, 1944, in Bokoshe, Okla., the son of Robert and Edna Stroup.  A longtime resident of Alaska, he worked on construction projects throughout the state, including the trans-Alaska oil pipeline.  Mr. Stroup was looking forward to receiving his 35-year pin from the Ironworkers Union, Local 757.  "A resident of Alaska since approximately 1969, Robert was an award-winning welder," his family said.  "He was the first welder in the state to be certified as a low temperature iron welder.  His test performance helped set the standard for certification exams in the state.  Robert also holds the distinction of being the first welder in Alaska to be capable of welding plastic.  "Robert was a master craftsman with stained glass design and construction.  He also mastered ... basket weaving in the style of the Aleuts.  "Locally, he was a member of the Sons of the American Legion where he served as the historian and ... photographer.  He was a founding and charter member of the original ABATE chapter.  In 1967, he started a chapter of 'trails and trophy' racing (motorcross).  By 1968 he was listed in the American Motorcycle Association as qualified for invitational races.  "He was a member of his high school band, the Civil Air Patrol, ROTC and DeMolay International." Mr. Stroup was preceded in death by his father, Robert; stepbrother, Ray Paddock Jr.; and stepsister, Shirly Davis. He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Edna and Ray Paddock; daughter, Lori Stroup; sisters, Aleta Dyer and husband Jeff, and Gayle Wright; stepsiblings, James Paddock and Carol Jorgenson and husband Peter; many nieces and nephews, cousins, uncles and an aunt; his American Legion family; and longtime friend, R.T. Terranove. Donations may be made to American Legion Post 35 in Wasilla or to any liver research organization. Arrangements are with Valley Funeral Home and Crematory.
