John STROUP
Mary ALBRIGHT
PLEASE NOTE:  There is a STRAUB Y-chromosome DNA Surname Project in progress.  DNA testing of a male STROUP who is a patrilineal (direct male line) descendant of our subject can prove to which STROUP family this line belongs.
Husband:  John STRAUB / STROUB / STROUP / STROUPE
Birth:  11 Oct 1816, Mifflin [now Juniata] Co., PA
Death:  12 Nov 1894, Richland, Keokuk Co., IA — or MO?
Disposition:  buried Old Methodist Cemetery, Richland, Keokuk Co., IA
Occupation:  farmer
Father:  Mr. STRAUB / STROUB / STROUP
Mother:  Eve __?__, b. 1793/4, PA

Said by some to be a son of these parents:
Father:  Andrew STRAUB (c1770-1826), Founder of Freeburg
Mother:  Barbara __?__ (c1774-    )
But even if her name was Eva Barbara, we know our subject's mother was much younger than Andrew's wife.

There is a likely candidate for our subject's father, at least, he and his wife are the right ages and living in the right place at the right time:
Father:  Moses STROUP (b. 1790s)
Mother:  Ms. __?__ (b. 1790s)
We know nothing about this Moses STROUP, except that he appears just once in the 1830 census of Mifflin [now Juniata] Co., PA, had at least six children, including two sons born 1815-20, and is likely a son of the above Andrew STRAUB.

The worst case scenario here is that Eve married after the 1810 census, birthed John in 1816, then was widowed by 1820, so her husband never does appear as head-of-household in any census.  Where our subject should appear is in the Orphans Court records of Mifflin Co., PA.  Because women had no legal powers, a child was considered an orphan even if his mother was still living.  The court would appoint a male legal guardian for any minor child of a deceased man, so there should be Orphans Court records for the children of Eve STROUP giving their names and the name of her late husband.

Wife:  Mary ALBRIGHT
