(Adam?) Michael STROUP
Maria Magdalena __?__
NOTICE:  A patrilineal descendant of our subject is participating in the STRAUB Y-chromosome DNA Surname Project.  Anyone who suspects they descend from our subject on a direct male line can now support that connection with a DNA test.  His DNA test results bury forever the assertion that he related to Johann Pieter STRAUB, 1733 immigrant to Philadelphia, or to Jacob STROUP I, of Lincoln Co., NC, because their descendants are Haplogroup I1-AS5.  There is a DNA match between out subject's patrilineal descendant and a patrilineal descendant of Jacob STROUP of PA and Grant Co., OH.  How they connect is unknown, but connect they surely do.
Husband:  (Adam?) Michael STROUP
Birth:  ca. 1730s?, Germany? MD?
Death said to be:  1797, Huntingdon Co., PA
Military Service said to be:  Revolutionary War:  Pvt. in Capt. Lewis Farmer's Co., Col. Samuel Miles's Rgmt., Pennsylvania Line
Y-DNA Haplogroup:  I2a-Dinaric-S

Adam is said to be born in 1746 or 1755, but if so, he would have been too young to be the father of Martha (or even Joseph, if the later date), which may mean two men, an Adam STROUP and a Michael STROUP, are being mixed up here.

Our subject's son, Joseph, lived briefly in Huntington Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA, on his way from Maryland to Ohio.  Could that location have lead to the belief that Michael died in Huntingdon Co., PA?

Marriage:
Wife:  Maria Magdalena / Mary Magdalene __?__
Birth:  ca. 1740s?
Death said to be, but doubtfully:  1798, Huntingdon Co., PA
Children — probably all born in MD:
1.  Martha Mary [Margaret / Magdalene] STROUP, b. 1763
2.  Joseph STROUP, b. 1755-65
3.  Anthony STROUP, b. 12 May 1773
4.  Elizabeth STROUP, b. 23 Sep 1777, MD
5.  Michael STROUP, b. 1 May 1779, MD

Elizabeth and Michael lived long enough to be enumerated in the 1850 census, and both give Maryland as their birthplace, so we have conclusive evidence that this family originated in Maryland.
After a detour through KY, all of the children ultimately settled in Highland Co., OH, except daughter Elizabeth, who settled in Franklin Co., OH.

2a.  Census Index:  U.S. Selected Counties, 1790 (Broderbund CD-311):  not found.  There is a Simeon STRAP indexed on this CD as being in Huntingdon Co., PA, but no STRAUB/STROUP appears in Huntingdon Co. until 1830.

2b.  1790 Census Index and Digital Images (online at Ancestry.com):  I have checked the Huntingdon Co., PA, census page-by-page and did not find either an Adam or a Michael STRAUB/STROUP.

3.  Census Index:  U.S. Selected Counties, 1800 (Broderbund CD-312):  not found.

4.  LDS.  Family Search: Internet Genealogy Service:  AF - Ancestral File (online at FamilySearch.org).

5.  DAR.  Lineage Books.  v. 100, p. 88 (online at Ancestry.com).  Says Adam was born 1755 in Germany, but if so, he is too young to be the father of Martha and Joseph.  Be wary of any early submission to the DAR.  People did falsify records to gain membership, and while the DAR is, now, making an effort to cull these fraudulent submissions, they still exist in the old published Lineage Books.  This is the source that calls our subject "Adam," instead of Michael.  It's certainly possible that his name was Adam Michael.
