Isaac STROPES
Nancy NELSON
Mary __?__
Husband:  Isaac STROPES
Birth:  24 Dec 1801 or 1802/3, PA
Death:  aft. 1880
Occupation:  teamster, laborer
Father:  John STROPES, Sr.
Mother:  Eleanor FOX
Marriage-1:  18 Sep 1825, Jackson Co., OH
Wife-1:  Nancy NELSON
Birth:  1805
Death:  1838
Marriage-2:  ca. 1839
Wife-2:  Mary "Polly" __?__
Birth:  ca. 1810-15 {1850: 28, VA; 1860: 49, VA; 1870: 56, VA; 1880: 72, VA}
Death:  aft. 1880

It's hard to know which of Mary's ages is correct, but the ones making her older are probably nearer the truth.

Children with Nancy NELSON — born in Franklin Twp., Jackson Co., OH:
  1.  Lorenzo Dow STROPES, b. 1824/5
  2.  Joseph STROPES, b. 1825-30
  3.  Hannah STROPES, b. 16 May 1827
  4.  Elizabeth "Betsy" STROPES, b. 1835/6
  5.  Rebecca STROPES, b. 1838

If Nancy's death-year is correct (it appears to be from a tombstone), then Rebecca is most likely her daughter, not Mary's.

Children with Mary — born in OH, probably in Scioto Co., OH:
  6.  Harriet STROPES, b. 1840
  7.  Martha E. STROPES, b. 1841; m. 21 Oct 1860, Scioto Co., OH, James H. PATTEN
  8.  Mary STROPES, b. 1842
  9.  Thomas STROPES, b. 1844
10.  Daniel STROPES, b. 1846
11.  James STROPES, b. Nov 1849
12.  Melissa STROPES, b. ca. 1850

No. & Sex  Age Class Therefore Born Individuals Inferred
2 males 4 or under 1825-1830 = Joseph
= Lorenzo
1 male 20-29 1800-1810 = Isaac (b. 1802/3)
1 female 4 or under 1825-1830 = Hannah (b. 1826/7)
1 female 20-29 1800-1810 = Nancy (b. 1805)

4a.  1850 Census Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com; Image #46 of 56):  Green Twp., Scioto Co., OH, p. 151B, 311/311, enumerated 5 Sep 1850, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1850 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):¤•

Harriet 10 F       Do
Martha  9 F       Do
Mary  8 F       Do
Thomas  6 M       Do
Daniel  4 M       Do
James 6/12 M       Do
Polly's age is definitely written 28 and Betsey's definitely 12, which both have to be incorrect.  Also, Betsey was born in Ohio, not Virginia.  Some secondary sources have mis-read son "James" as "Isaac" — not surprisingly because this enumerator's handwriting is abominable (oddly so because he was obviously skilled with a pen, but simply chose to be inscrutable).

Where was Melissa in 1850?  Is she really 11 years old or is she younger than James?
