transcription of Jacob STROOPE's will, from Vol. II, The Soujourners [boldface added]
p. 331 In the name of God amen.  I Jacob Stroope of the County of Clark and State of Arkansas, being of sound mind and memory and considering the uncertainty of this frail & transitory life, do therefore make, ordain, publish & declare this to be my last will and testament.  That is to say, first, after all my lawful debts are paid and discharged, the residue of my Estate, real and personal, I give, bequeath, and dispose of as follows:  To my wife Elizabeth Stroope, all the money, notes, accounts or assets of every kind and description, as well as all the personal property and chattels that I am seized or possessed of at the time of my death.  And also the following slaves for life, to wit:  Jack, Mose, and Harriet, which I give and bequeath to my said wife during her natural life in lieu of her dowry interest in my Estate, the personal property, money, and notes to use and dispose of as she may think fit.  To my son Wm. H. Stroope, a negro girl named Mariah, for life; to my daughter Nancy Denton, I give her the three negroes that she now has in her possession, named John, Emily & Percilla, and a tract of land in the State of Texas, which land and negroes I consider worth $3,000, and that amount I consider her full share and an equal portion of my Estate, with what she has heretofore received from me.  To my three grandsons and sons of the late Eliza Pettit (my deceased daughter) Washington, Lee and Jacob Pettit, minor heirs of said Eliza, one negro woman Jinny and her child, which they have had in their possession for the last twelve years and which said negroes with what their said mother Eliza has heretofore received I consider their full share and portion of my Estate.  To my daughter Mary Knox, the following negroes, Pauline, James, and one infant child of Harriet's, age about three months, and at the death of my wife, the woman Harriett and the girl Martha that she now has in her possession.  To my son Jacob P. Stroope, Susan and her two children Narcessa and Rilda, which he has had in possession some two years, and a boy named Ben.  To my son James M. Stroope, a negro man named Moses (which he is not to receive until after the death of my said wife)
p. 332 and Julia, Isom, and Jane, which he now has in possession, also my plantation which is in his name and in mine, being the place that I now live on, and - to my said boy Jack at the death of my said wife, his freedom and to live with and be under the care of my son William H. but to act for himself in all other respects as freemen of color should do, and to my sons William H. and Jacob P. I hereby give and appoint them as the executors of this my last will and testament.  And I further consider with what I now bequeath to my said children and what they have heretofore received of me in negroes, money, and property, that it makes all their shares equal in my siad estate.

In witness whereof I have hereto subscribed my name and affixed my seal on this fourteenth day of September A.D. 1854.  Signed, sealed, and subscribed in the presence of us and each of us and at the request of the testator.
