Nicholas & Syntha are John's parents.  John is apparently widowed and has returned home to live with his parents.  The child Sarah appears to be his daughter as she shows up with him in the 1870 census, which explains why she is out of order on this list.

3a.  1870 Census Index/Images (online at Genealogy.com, Image #5 of 66):  Grandview P.O., Hammond Twp., Spencer Co., IN, p. 452A, PN 5, 59/59, enumerated 22 Jun 1870, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1870 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):¤•

This record was difficult to read.  Sarah is John's daughter from a prior marriage.

3b.  1870 Census Index/Images (online at Genealogy.com, Image #59 of 66):  Grandview P.O., Hammond Twp., Spencer Co., IN, Roll 358 (Book 1), p. 478A, PN 59, 444/444, enumerated 11 Aug 1870, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1870 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):¤

_______ Sarah A 14 F W At Home     Indiana
Is this John's daughter, Sarah, still living with her grandparents?  If so, then she was enumerated twice, once with father and once with her grandparents.

4.  1880 Census (indexed at FamilySearch.org; page image online at Ancestry.com, Image #27 of 36):  Centerville, Grass Twp., Spencer Co., IN, Roll 312 (Book 1), p. 187C, PN 27, SD _, ED _, enumerted 16 Jun 1880, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1880 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):¤•

This record is hard to fathom, especially in comparison to 1870.  I wouldn't believe it was our subject, except that not only are the name and age correct, his sister is living with him and his mother is living next door.  Did he divorce his first wife, and did she take their children with her?  If so, where are they?
