STRAUB, VALENTINE, Cumru. March 9, 1824 - September 24, 1825. Provides for wife. Children: Valentine, George, Christian, Hannah wife of Jacob SHILLING, Catharine, Sarah wife of John LAMBERT, Esther wife of John BOYER, Mary wife of Peter HERTZLER, Susanna, and Elizabeth (the latter 2 probably deceased) as their shares go to their children.  To John BOYER, a son-in-law £1000 as the trustee of Valentine, a son, the interst to be paid to him during life and the principal at his death to other heirs.  Son George to receive his share whenever he returns to Berks County. Exrs: Jacob SHILLING, son-in-law. Wit: Christian MILLER, Joseph WARNER and Elijah DECKERT. Letters granted Jacob SHILLING April 10, 1827. Letters granted to Michael KRAEMER March 18, 1864 (sic).

Biographical sketches of Jacob Straub and his kin.  Valentine settled on the Tulpehocken Creek (which is in Cumru Twp.), Berks Co., PA.  Valentine's father settled in Columbia and is said to have lived out his days there, with the implication that all of his children were born there.

The soft warm air had turned humid again, and I craved rain, remembering how one could walk and stay dry under trees that no longer existed.  I was on the even-numbered side of Philadelphia Avenue, the side across from my own house and hence slightly foreign.  Near the corner, the Gehrets' house of gray fieldstone was the oldest house in Shillington, built in 1742 and, for a time, the home of Samuel Shilling, who in 1860 laid out lots along Philadelphia Avenue and called the development Shillingsville, a name upgraded in 1884, when a post office was established.  A series of men had married into this land.  Samuel's father, Jacob, in 1816 had married the daughter of Valentine Straub, who in 1777 had married the daughter of George Riehm, who had bought two hundred eighty acres from Jacob Weiss and Thomas Jones; they, in 1733 and 1734 respectively, had purchased their holdings directly from William Penn.  In 1761 Riehm had built the Three-Mile House, an inn three miles from Reading on the Lancaster Pike.
